Excellent day pack     On: 2008-11-28

I have been using this bag for about a year now and I love it.

Pros
+ Lots of compartments for good organization
+ Excellent construction and build quality
+ Highly ergonomic. Feels balanced even when fully loaded with laptop, books etc
+ The hydration sleeve pocket can be used for storing stuff like sunglasses, iPod etc

Cons
- Heavy even when empty
- Main compartment is not as wide as I would like it to be.
- No specialized laptop compartment. I put my laptop in a neoprene sleeve and then carry it in the bag.

I would definitely recommend this bag.
carry on     On: 2008-10-24

This bag was a perfect size for a carry on, multiple compartments, real good quality.
backpack with a lot of pockets     On: 2008-09-23

My husband didnt like this backpack because it had too many pockets. I find it to be durable and large enough to pack for a weekend trip. It does have a lot of pockets, but that doesnt mean its not a good pack.
GOOD PACK     On: 2008-07-16

IVE USED IT FOR CAMPING/CANEOING & ALSO IN COLLEGE THIS THING WORKS GREAT, PLENTY OF STORAGE ALMOST TO MUCH SOMETIMES, I AGREE WITH WHAT MOST REVIEWERS SAID ABOUT ALL THE BENEFITS, MY ONE PROBLEM IS THAT THE LITTLE PLASTIC DEALS THAT THE STERNUM STRAP IS ATTACHED TO PULLED OFF THE PACK ON ONE SIDE
Very Satisfied     On: 2008-06-23

Gave this as a HS grad gift, and it was a hit! LOTS of space and pockets and zippers and loops and hooks...etc. Will fit a laptop nicely, along with books and supplies. Waist belt and comfy shoulder straps. My daughters boyfriend has one, and her college friends admire it. Works good as a daypack and travel pack for overnighters, too. Price was right, and Amazon was fantastic as always. I was happy with this purchase.
Buy only the JanSport Odyssey Backpack for Middle School and up!     On: 2008-05-10

This is the second JanSport Odyssey Backpack Ive purchased online. Now both my high school age sons have one. It is the best model to protect their backs as it provides the largest available volume for their numerous heavy books. No sign of wear or zipper breakage in the one the oldest son has had for 1 1/2 yrs. Im sure theyll be going to college with them! Be smart and start you kids in middle school with this backpack and dont waste your money on any other!
JanSport Odyssey     On: 2008-03-26

This is my second JanSport Odyssey bag, I used my backpack through 4 years of college and now I bought this one for my wife who is starting college this spring. This bag is perfect for school; it has enough compartments to hold books and binders for 3 classes. It has a compartment that holds enough pencils and pens to last you the whole year. It also has pockets to hold water bottles, your cell phone, and your lunch. I am still using my backpack to commute via bus and ferry to work. I highly recommend this backpack for anyone who is going to school. Hope this helps.
Open Wide     On: 2008-03-11

This is a great bag for space. If you have a lot to pack and are resourceful, then you can find many uses for a bag like this. One thing I wish it had was a built in rain-fly. Or one could just buy a backpack cover from REI that would be sufficient.
excellent backpack     On: 2008-02-22

This backback provides more than enough space for my 8th grader who carries loads of books and binders daily. Best buy on a backpack I have found yet.
Great Day Trip Pack     On: 2008-02-18

I received this pack as a Christmas present in 2007. By mid-February 2008, Ive already traveled to Denver, Hong Kong/Macau using this pack - living out of it daily, all day, for over two weeks in China.

This is a fantastic pack with heavy duty zippers.

There are pockets for almost everything you will carry: passport, wallet, cell phone, mp3 player, USB cables, sunscreen, sunglasses, chapstick, pens, pencils, PDA, fruit, candy, local maps, phrase book, camera, portable tripod, and water in the outside storage nets. Plenty of room for a laptop, umbrella, sweater, shell, and a light jacket when you dont know what the weather will be. There was still room for souvenirs that you have to pick up while in a foreign country. Theres only 1 compartment with internal organization. The others are normal "stuff it until it is full" compartments.

The pack is comfortable, but only when worn as a full backpack - over both shoulders. I found that wearing over one shoulder wasnt comfortable for my 6 frame longer than a few minutes. The straps seemed too wide to me. With both straps on, it was easy to adjust for a perfect and comfortable fit.

I lost about 10 lbs by walking and hiking around Hong Kong & Macau with this pack. It was the primary item when heading out for a day exploring whether it was to the 10,000 Buddha Temple, the Po Lin Monastery, a day of skiing or just a day of shopping in Kowloon, Hong Kong, Atlanta or Denver.

I usually only used half the compartments and created a system where unused compartments had the zipper closed towards the left side and heavily used compartments were closed with the zippers at the top. Dont get me wrong, Ive had 3 other backpacks and none of them had enough compartments for my needs. The Odyssey does.

I do admit that Ive only carried a 15.5" laptop in it a few times. There is plenty of room so I suspect a 17" laptop could be placed into it too. Youll want a laptop sleeve if you carry a PC (not included). I use an old laptop foam insert. I dont take a full laptop when traveling for pleasure, so read other laptop-centric reviews for this pack if that is your main requirement.

Also, it supports a water reservoir which isnt included, but you can easily make due with bottled water. Im going to order a reservoir to support day hiking on north Georgia trails.

What would I change?
- more internal slots/pockets to organize smaller items
- include the water reservoir
- 2 fewer large compartments
- add a larger carrying handle - single hand carrying can be awkward
- create a way to strap it to my 20" roller luggage that isnt awkward
Perfect for just about everything     On: 2008-02-01

This is the best day hiker backpack Ive ever seen. Its HUGE inside with tons of different pockets to stash stuff in. Its got an organizer pocket to hold pens, IPod etc. with a Velcro closure and two zippered mesh pockets. The waist belt can be tucked inside the pack and its got a pocket for a water bladder. I use this bag as carry on when I fly, as a book bag for class and as a day bag for hiking. Jansport did an awesome job on this bag!
Great Daypack and academic bag     On: 2008-01-31

I received this daypack for Christmas (as did my fiance). We are both avid dayhikers, and both in school. This bag carries everything that we need, from basic survival necessities to camera supplies. Plus, I have yet to overload this bag when loading all of my school books in it. I wish I had known about this bag sooner, I would not have wasted money on a bag that was specific for each of my purchases.

A great pack! Substantial suspension and airy back padding. Small panel in front. Larger panel in the middle with dividers for office supplies etc. Opposing side of same panel has two mesh pockets. Great size of main panel with full horseshoe access. Top zipper pocket for small items and hydration bladder that runs the whole dimension of the back pad. Could be used for additional stowage if not using a bladder. Two elastic mesh bottle holders are nicer than one. Great for a weekend (or week if you pack light) away and can easily hold a laptop - but would recommend using a padded sleeve. Actual fabric color (red state) came with darker grey panels and the pack appears more subtle than the contrast in the stock photo.

lots of space!     On: 2007-12-26

i bought this product for my 28 year old boyfriend.

it is a bit heavier than i expected but he is fine with the weight. there are tons of pockets and the largest compartment is HUGE, he could easily fit 2 or 3 days of clothes in there.

i think if you were a smaller person you may not want to choose this backpack because of the weight of it, but all in all it is great.
Great Back Pack     On: 2007-12-24

This bag is awesome. Yes it is big but thats what I wanted.
Here is a list of what I carry daily:
Books and notebooks for two classes
Large calculator
35mm Digital camera w/
300mm zoom lens
Macro lenses
Extra set of office keys (large and bulky)
Sunglasses
All the wires, cables and battery charger for my camera
Misc. other small things

And I still have room for tons more.
If you are looking for a big, durable and comfortable to carry do it all bag, this is the one.

Not for tall people     On: 2007-11-30

On the down side:

- Im 59" and the straps are too short for me. They yank my arms backwards when I wear the pack which is rather uncomfortable.

- It is poorly made. The little zipper pull ties fall off. Ive lost about one a week and have replaced them with safety pins. Its a great punk look, but Id rather they have designed them to stay on.

On the plus side:

- The waist strap, which I would use every ten or twenty million years, can be folded away, which is a big plus over a lot of comparable models. When the next geological era starts, Ill be ready.

- The stiff backplate is awkward and assumes that you walk with a particular posture. It works like those old fashioned backboards they used to torment debutantes with. Luckily, it can be bent slightly to fit better.

- It is HUGE. The big main compartment can swallow two or three days worth of clothing and toiletries along with 20lbs of Brie de Nangis! (Thats three whole wheels of cheese).

Perfect for my needs.     On: 2007-11-09

This pack is perfect for my needs. I wanted:

* Something large, with multiple compartments.
* Place for iPod.
* Place for a CamelBack water pouch.
* Waist straps available for heavy load, but not invasive for lighter loads. (You can stow them inside.)
* Lots of lashing loops for storing stuff on the outside.
* Lots of holders for things like pens and pencils.

This backpack does it all and more! It also has AirLift cushioning, so its really comfy. Its the most versatile pack Ive seen, functioning equally well for use as a pack at college and as a day/day-and-a-half pack for backpacking.
Great backpack, but somewhat diappointed     On: 2007-11-03

Overall the backpack is great, it had some flaws.

Cons: One of the zipper pull straps came off with little pull force when I first got it. Also, the adjustable shoulder straps are very narrow and get tanged easily when you adjust the straps.

Pros: The shoulder straps are very comfortable. Lots of storage space. Very well organized compartments. I also love the way it looks; it does not look like your topical backpack.

Overall great backpack, but I dont feel its worth $100, because of its flaws.
Not for the short     On: 2007-11-02

Too big for the vertically impaired. I wanted a big bookbag but this is humongous! Great quality as expected from Jansport but at 53", its overwhelming. My husband uses it now.

Solved my problems     On: 2007-08-16

Ive had this bag a few months now, and its surprising how nuanced backpacks are. I just bought a laptop and, on top of text books, folders, and the lifestyle of a full time worker and full time student, I have to carry a lot of things with me that most people keep at home. This bag lets me organize everything perfectly, it stays clean, and the cushioned straps prevent the loss of circulation I was experiencing with my old bag. I recommend this bag for any college student.

Perfect backpack!     On: 2007-06-28

I had recently purchased the wasabi metro JanSport backpack and loved it. My wife said she wanted something just like it. I then saw the Odyssey and decided to give the wasabi to my wife and move up a notch to the Odyssey. Very well made and worth the money. There are a total of six pockets. The first and second pockets from the front are open storage areas. The third pocket has two mesh zippered pockets inside as well as a sunglasses holder and dividers and slots for things like pens, pencils... as toothbrush and other things. The fourth and fifth pockets are large storage pockets. The sixth and last pocket has a smaller pocket for your iPod and a larger for a hydration system or even more storage depending on what you are using it for. It has waist straps as well as a place to tuck them in when you dont want to use them, which for me is most of the time. It also has a semi firm internal frame for when you really load it down. Good design and MORE than enough storage area without being too big and bulky.

Best Choice     On: 2007-05-13

This backpack is amazing. If youre looking for something that will take all your stuff, and a few more, then this is the one. We went to Italy last month and I bought it as a diaper bag for our 4months son. It took his stuff (which is a lot), two cameras, 2 bottles and a notebook! It also has a number of adjustments to distribute the load.
I bought a pack for Africa     On: 2007-01-22

Bought the pack for a 23 day trip to Africa. I would highly recomend this pack to anyone. Carried on the plane easily stored. Holds any thing you can think to pack with very little stress on your back.

JanSport Odyssey Backpack     On: 2007-01-19

I bought this for my daughter to use for college based on previous reviews praising roominess and good support. The backpack is great with lots of different compartments and shoulder and waist straps that really help balance the weight. My daughter is able to carry her laptop, numerous books, gym clothes, and a huge waterbottle to get her through the day.
Excellent pack, especially for students     On: 2007-01-19

Highly recommended!!!! My wife uses this pack for nursing school. As you can imagine she carries A LOT OF "STUFF". This pack makes it a lot lighter on the shoulders than a normal pack would because of the padding in the straps. I would recommend this to anyone who is a student and is looking for a durable pack for school.

Outstanding Pack - One Happy Customer!     On: 2007-01-14

Ive been a JanSport fan for over 20 years and have owned various backpacks and packs, and I always come back to JanSport. You just cant beat the quality and durability of a JanSport. I have to say without a doubt the Odyssey is an outstanding pack for what it is designed for. It has tons of room, is well thought out, loaded with features, and most importantly, comfortable to wear even fully loaded. I use if for commuting every day and frequent travel for work. I can load it up with my laptop, an extra sweater or light jacket, my portfolio and still have plenty of room for all of those extra things you need when traveling. If youre looking for a high quality pack thats versatile, loaded with features and comfortable, look no further.

Great compartmentalization, a little stress     On: 2007-01-11

Pros:
1.great compartmentalization everything is easy to obtain (if you know where to put it).
2.Lots of room able to put just about everything in it. gym clothes, several text books, laptop, camping gear, etc.

Cons:
1.its bulky, even when nothing is in it, its bulky. if your one who likes to show off your back or want a sense of style this is not the product for you. Tip: to make less bulky, put more stuff in bigger compartments relative to smaller compartment.

2. THe shoulder strap strain resistant doesnt quite work...im consider myself an average male, strain works in about 25lbs. if you want less strain id go for the Targus or Wenger brands.

Conclusion: if all you want is lots of space to put ur stuff w/o the style involved this product is for you.

Best Book Backpack     On: 2007-01-10

I have had many backpacks for school and am always left wanting more space. I like to have different places to put different materials. This gives me the opportunity to do so. I like the fact that I can put my Ipod in a section that is not likely to recieve the weight of the many books I use. I would say that the area where you hold the smaller items, such as pens and calculators, is nice. You have dividers where you can hold many different things. Overall, this is the best pack for school I have come across.
One word, versatile!     On: 2007-01-03

I use it a lot for hauling stuff around work. Lots of compartments. It holds a lot of networking tools, patch cables, pens, paper, books, and laptop. Love the top pocket near the handle. Keep my cell phone and MP3 player in it for easy access. It has, but i dont use it, a camelbak hanger built in. Very neat. Great for long treks. I also use it as carry on luggage when flying. Able to keep lots of things easily accessible. Food, games, books, etc. Overall i could not be happier. Great backpack, wouldnt trade it for any other! Versatile!
Awesome backpack     On: 2006-11-13

I love my Jansport Odyssey backpack. It has a lot of room and the straps are much more comfortable than any other backpack I have ever owned or tried. I have a lot of very heavy books and this backpack cant be beaten for tranporting books. A little more padding in the straps (or smaller textbooks)would make it perfect, but it is still better than anything I have seen out there. I would highly recommend it to any high school or college student.

Great Backpack for air travel     On: 2006-11-05

I bought this pack as a substitute for bulky roller bags. It works great but if you stuff it to the maximum you may have to compress it down a bit for some overhead racks. The separate compartments give you plenty of flexibility and it will accomodate a shirt folded as received from most laundries. The padding is excellent and the weight distribution makes it very easy to carry.

I will also use this as a day pack for hiking although it has more space than generally needed for this. The organizer section works well to carry cell phone, PDA or any other miscellaneous items.

Construction is excellent and it is versatile enough to accomodate a wide range of uses.Great value at the price charged.
Great capacity, holds 17" powerbook     On: 2006-09-17

I needed a replacement for my Targus backpack that I used to haul my 17" powerbook. This pack is lighter, smaller (which is a good thing; the Targus was huge!), yet has as much useful pack space as the Targus. I vastly prefer it; the only question is that of durability, but as my last Jansport pack lasted 5 years and my Targus only lasted 1.5 before blowing a zipper, Ill give Jansport the benefit of the doubt.

Supremely comfortable, two water bottleholders, a bladder slot, and plenty of pockets. Top notch!
Great Daypack!!!!!     On: 2006-09-01

Its a great packpack. The padded staps are the highlight of this Jansport backpack. Overall wonderfull packpack!!!!!!
JanSport Odyssey Daypack     On: 2006-08-24

Great daypack with ample space and plenty of pockets. The ability to accomodate a hydration bladder is a nice feature for hiking and the padding on the shoulder straps is excellent. This back pack is versatile and comfortable.
